I. Purpose of Awards and Recognitions
The purpose of awards is to recognize outstanding nurses whose contributions to nursing fulfill the goals of Sigma Theta Tau.
1. A member of Sigma Theta Tau, Zeta Delta Chapter-At-Large, in good standing.
2. GPA (when students are involved)
3. Peer/faculty recognition
4. Endorsement and support from nursing and/or community leaders (if appropriate)
B. Types of Awards and Criteria
Some chapters may choose go give awards in one or more categories. Examples of possible chapter awards are, but are not limited to:
1. Awards for Excellence in Research
a. Conducts distinguished research in nursing.
b. Communicates nursing research findings.
c. Writes scholarly works related to nursing theory and/or nursing research.
d. Gives evidence of a history of nursing research activities.
e. Encourages research activities within Sigma Theta Tau, nursing, and/or the public.
2. Awards for Excellence in Education
a. Demonstrates excellence in teaching.
b. Advances the science of nursing through clarifying, refining and/or expanding the knowledge base of nursing.
c. Promotes a theory/research base for nursing curricula and nursing practice.
d. Influences scholarly development in nursing education, practice, and/or research through teaching.
e. Influences the professional practice of nursing and the public’s image or nursing through excellence in teaching.
3. Awards for Excellence in Nursing Practice
a. Demonstrates breadth of knowledge in area of clinical nursing practice.
b. Develops creative approaches to nursing practice that contribute to quality client care.
c. Possesses clinical expertise and attributes of a clinical scholar.
d. Advances the scope and practice of nursing.
e. Serves as mentor/preceptor that inspires peer’s practice of nursing.
f. Enhances the image of nursing through nursing practice.
g. Participates in community affairs, legislation, or organizations that affect nursing practice.
a. Receives local, national and/or international recognition as a nursing leader in education, practice, administration and/or research
b. Influences leadership in nursing through visionary and innovative approaches to leadership.
c. Creates an environment that enhances the image on nursing/nurses.
d. Participants in the development of nursing leaders and leadership.
5. Awards for Outstanding Student Performance Areas
a. May include clinical, academic, creative, research, leadership, etc.
a. Actively shapes and promotes the career of a nurse or the development of a chapter.
b. Freely shares our own resources for the growth and development of the individual or the chapter.
c. Maintains the mentoring relationship over time.
III. Nominations
A. Nominations are invited from any active member of the chapter at least four months before final selection date. Invitation shall be publicized in chapter newsletter mailing to members.
B. Nominations are due December 1, three months before final selections.
C. IV. Selection – (Judges, Awards Committee)
1. A selection committee will consist of three appointed chapter members, one of whom is or has been in a chapter leadership position.
2. Selection committee shall review nominations and rate candidates on criteria listed.
3. Final selection shall be on the basis of total points in rating. Recommendations for nominees will be made to the Board of Directors.
V. Award
The recipient of the award will receive a plaque and recognition at the Spring Induction in April.
